Today: Choosing Gratitude

Where are you at today?

Oh, I’m not necessarily asking the “physical” question. Most of us are probably going to be saying the same thing: home.

Where are you at mentally? Physically? Spiritually?

I texted a friend this morning and told her I was: working on not worrying.

Yeah, much easier said than done.

Worry is such an easy corner to escape into. It gives us a momentary jolt of adrenaline, believing we have done something besides doing nothing. We have accomplished a way of making our world better, the problem smaller and our loved ones safer.

We have lied to ourselves. Allowed ourselves to believe that worrying fixes the problem and gives us a solution.

It really just gives us an ulcer and indigestion. And a plethora of rabbit trail issues that require our near constant focus and worry.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear, Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Matthew 6: 25-27

We don’t subtract from our troubles by worrying about then, we add to them. Even common core math can’t fix that problem.

It’s true: we face a big issue outside our doors today. And if you’re like me, worrying is the “easy” and “quick” solution. The road most crowded (and we’re not exactly standing 6 feet away from each other).

I would like to challenge each of us today (starting with me), to list the things we are grateful for today. To take our eyes off the doom, the worry, the stress and focus back on the things we know. The things we are grateful for. Because God has given us each one.

Will you join me?

10 Things I’m grateful for today:

  1. the Colorado sunshine
  2. the scent of baking quiche for this morning’s breakfast
  3. the washing machine working hard on my laundry at the moment
  4. the health of each of my loved ones
  5. our new home with room to welcome people over
  6. the library available in mobile format
  7. a strong body and ability to do an at-home workout
  8. time with the Lord in my devotions every day
  9. the game night with my husband last night
  10. the hug and kiss I received and gave to my husband before sending him off to work today

What are you thankful for today?

Will you share it with me? Share just 5 (or 10 or 15!) things in the comments that you are thankful for today. Big or small, use this time to focus not on the things of this world and all the worries that naturally come along with that. But focus on the things that are eternal, the things of God and the small (and big) blessings He has given us each and every moment of each and every day.

Let’s change the narrative today.

Psalm 23:

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

he restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

forever.
